How do I know if foxes are taking my lambs?

A missing lamb alone does not prove fox predation. Record when and where losses occur, photograph carcasses or tracks before disturbing them, note fence crossings and repeated movement, and consider other plausible causes. A pattern is more useful than one clue; an experienced local adviser can help interpret what you find.

What should I check before towing with my ute?

Check the ute's GVM, GCM, axle, towbar and towball limits; the trailer's ATM/GTM; payload used by passengers, accessories and cargo; and actual loaded weights. Also inspect tyres, brakes, coupling and load security. Follow the lowest applicable limit and manufacturer instructions; a sense-check is not engineering or legal-compliance certification.

Is livestock theft underreported in Australia?

Australian farm-crime research indicates livestock theft is not always reported. Reasons and estimates vary across surveys, so there is no single precise national rate. Record missing stock, dates, photos and neutral vehicle or person observations, then report suspected theft to police; Heimdall cannot identify a thief or infer intent.

What stage is Heimdall at?

The near-Nairne pilot is in development. Property permission is secured, and the component, sensing, evidence and operating foundations are defined and being extended. The first complete unit is not assembled and there are no field results yet; the pilot is intended to produce that evidence.

What would a farmer actually receive?

The intended observation output is time, node or node-pair, heading, confidence tier and a raw thumbnail. A person reviews the evidence and decides what happens next; Heimdall never acts autonomously.

Can it identify a thief or track neighbours?

No. Any person or vehicle output is neutral presence, location, movement and time. There is no face recognition, named biometric identity or claim about intent. For HNWI deployments, unmatched or unconfirmed human footage must purge after seven days.

Is Field & Flow a predator-control service?

No. It is a future predation-risk and operational-flow review. It may examine evidence gaps and how existing response work is coordinated, but excludes baiting, trapping, poisoning, shooting, dispatch and licensed pest-control work. Heimdall does not claim to replace or outperform 1080 or other established controls.

Heimdall is being developed to surface neutral, reviewable observations—a time, node location, heading, confidence tier and raw thumbnail—while an event is still worth reviewing. A person, not the system, decides what happened and what to do next.

Published evidence establishes fox pressure and documents a livestock-theft reporting gap—not Heimdall's performance. The near-Nairne trial must still prove the sensing cascade under real paddock conditions.

The principles come first. We care about animal welfare, practical right-to-repair and a rolling delayed-open model that protects active development without turning yesterday's technology into permanent lock-in.

Animal welfare is the point

Earlier, reviewable information should help people prevent losses and respond proportionately, reducing avoidable harm to livestock, wildlife and working animals. Observation supports responsible decisions; it does not pretend to replace lawful control.

The owner stays in control

We do not want another sealed, dealer-dependent agricultural box that becomes useless when a vendor withdraws support or permission. Owned hardware should remain understandable, repairable and useful beyond a product cycle.

Open on a rolling clock

The current generation may retain a three-to-four-year commercial lead. Our intention is then to publish a defined package from that generation so the advantage keeps moving forward instead of becoming permanent lock-in.

Hack it forward

Once a generation opens, people should be encouraged to repair it, add sensors, alter software and share what works. Useful community improvements can then inform newer Heimdall generations and shorten the next development cycle.

Heimdall is one project those beliefs produce: a human-reviewed observation system intended to help people see earlier without surrendering control to another locked platform. The consulting remains useful without it; the technology has to earn its place.

This is the intended model, not a present licence promise. The exact release trigger, materials opened, licences, contribution terms and security boundaries must be defined before any generation ships.

We intend to direct part of later Field & Flow revenue, alongside grants, into the human-reviewed observation MVP. The near-Nairne pilot is in development: property permission is secured, and the technical, evidence and operating foundations are defined and being extended ahead of field deployment. No field results exist yet; the pilot still decides what the system can honestly claim.

What the near-Nairne MVP will measure

Reliable identification distance, night fox-versus-dog confusion rates, fence-post-height radio performance in real terrain, and field power autonomy. Those measurements determine what the system can honestly claim next.
